What makes them seconds? For the most part, I really can't tell but there is something wrong with every diaper that is a second. They are marked with a black mark, usually on the tag if there is a tag.  There are many things than can be wrong that can make a diaper not meet "first quality" standards.

Most often the cut is a bit small or short. It is possible that an edge isn't quite straight. Sometimes a layer is not quite flat. It will matter less after shrinkage. There could a a thin section in the weave of the fabric.  Every diaper will have something that makes it imperfect in some way. It might be this kind of error or it could be some dirt or hanging threads or whatever. Trim off a hanging thread with scissors.   If there is a major issue, use a needle and thread to repair it before you wash it.  That doesn't happen often but it could happen.

Usually cutting errors make the diaper smaller, not larger. They truly are seconds, and are sold "as-is". Seconds can be nice to have on hand to give some depth to your stash without having to spend much on diapers that really are your back-up diapers. If you wash 20 diapers at a time, you really need to have 3 dozen diapers on hand. So if you have 2 dozen first quality diapers for your main stash, your "spare" dozen can be seconds and it's ok if they are imperfect ones. Or, have a dozen seconds that you keep in various places, such as in the car, a sitter's house, or the grandparent's house, so you are never caught without a diaper on hand.

Affectionately known as "GMD Prefolds". These are hard-to-find, top quality, heavyweight 100 % cotton twill diapers.  These are the real thing, and so very well made.  They are far superior to the store bought kind, and will stand up to repeated washings, but of course no diaper lasts forever so don't believe unrealistic claims.  Using prefolds is a very economical way to diaper!  It works very well. Plus, they wash and dry very easily and never get that "icky polyester stink". Use a  Snappi Fastener, Boingo or pins to fasten it for a very secure fit. Or, just fold the diaper in thirds and place it in a wrap style cover.  You will find the "prefold love".  We feel these are the very best fabric, 100% Indian cotton, 4-8-4 ply, with the strongest edge stitching available, and custom sized for prefold perfection, exclusive to GMD. They are not available anywhere else, and are not marketed under any other brand name but Cloth-eez®. 100% cotton exclusive of trim. Made in Pakistan. They are certified according to STANDARD 100 by OEKO TEX® and of course meet CPSIA standards, too.

One FREE pair of pins per order is available with purchase of this item when you add the pins to your cart through this Link.

This version is unbleached cotton.  Unbleached cotton is usually the softest and fluffiest of the three versions (white, unbleached or organic).  But it can be hard to tell them apart and the difference is slight in the first place.  Please wash several times before first use to wash off the natural cotton oils before full absorbency is reached. This "prepping" (4 or more wash cycles) is a one-time thing. Link to more washing information.

Please note that you can use any mainstream laundry detergent on cotton diapers. You do not need to purchase "special for cloth diapers" detergents. We do not sell them and they are not needed on prefolds or Workhorse diapers.  Keep it simple. Use what you would normally use on your regular household laundry, however we recommend unscented choices for all laundry products for baby.

So exciting!

I ordered three dozen of these for our next baby since I'm hoping to do prefolds and covers until baby fits well into our OS stash. These are great and my toddler thought they were tiny blankets because they're so soft! I didn't see much issue with them, possibly a few threads that need to be clipped, but nothing more than that to consider them 'seconds.'

I love these diapers

Prefolds are so simple and beautiful. I cannot find the flaws or anything that makes these seconds so that’s just gravy. Love the softness of these!

Amazing diapers

I have a set that is the white version but these unbleached ones are a new level of softness and even more fluffy/absorbent. Wish I had gotten these first!

Seems Fine to me

The product came on time. Although they are marked seconds, I couldn’t see a glaring flaw. Washed them and they held up nicely in the wash.

...can't tell the difference...

I can't review about absorbency yet because little one isn't here yet. But regarding, firsts and seconds, I can't tell the difference except the mark on the tags.
