Preemie Cloth Diapers

Yes, cloth diapers do exist that actually fit a small baby, they are just not widely available. You have found the internet's largest cloth diaper source for premature and small babies.

Why cloth? It is easier to monitor your baby's output when using cloth diapers.

A proper fit really does make a difference. If you have a tiny one, don't waste your precious energy struggling to stuff diapers that are too big into a cover that doesn't fit correctly. Purchasing preemie size diapering items for any baby under about 6 pounds 10 ounces is a worthwhile investment you will be glad to have made.

Using cloth diapers that fit correctly is easy, but figuring out what diapering items to buy is the hard part! The preemie diapers will be your doublers later on, so you never need to buy a doubler. The wipes will be used like crazy all the way to potty learning also. The only thing you won't keep using are the covers, which will get outgrown, but the rest of the items you need to get started you will keep using for then next 2.5 years. Thus, if you have a little one, it's actually a very economical purchase the suggested amounts.

3 or 4 dozen preemie diapers (the diapers are little so you can fit a lot in the washer. 4 dozen recommended.)

5 covers

3 or 4 packs of flannel wipes (flannel are thinner than two-sided wipes which is nice for a tiny one)

same as above, 6 pounds, 2 oz. She will outgrow this very quickly, but it does fit her now.

Bummi Original size newborn, on 6 pound 2 ounce baby, above. She's not a preemie but is still little. If you have a great picture of a tiny one, please send let us know. We'd love some better pictures to help parents of tiny ones make good choices.

Bummis Super Whisper print size newborn. This is a much bigger cover. Notice the big gap at the leg. The velcro tab should have been pulled in to overlap each other to snug that up on this little one. Snugging it in would make it workable on her. But even so, the Bummis Original at left does fit smaller and better on skinny little legs, which is why we choose the Bummi Original size newborn as the cover in the Petite Package.

preemie diapersame baby 6 pounds 2 onces in Imse Vimse Organic size Preemie. She has plenty of growing room in this, and she is not that small at all. This is the largest and softest of the preemie sized covers. A decent enough fit on tiny legs. It comes up tall so it will fit for longer than Litewrap size preemie does. Litewrap will fit a smaller baby than this one will. Imse preemie is not really a preemie cover but is more of a full term newborn cover. This would be too big on a smaller baby.

preemiePreemie baby, 5 pounds 8 ounces in a Thirsties Duo size 1. The trick to making this work on such a little one is using a preemie prefold underneath it.

The baby below is not a preemie but was just 1 week early and about 6.5 pounds. The front edge folds down on the The Original Wrap size newborn, shown over a Preemie prefold. It is very hard to find pictures of preemies. If you have a picture that might be helpful for others with preemies to see on this page please send it to karen@greenmountaindiapers.com. The Bummis Original Wrap size newborn does work on preemies but I don't have a picture yet.
