A new parent's diapering journey: the first week

This is a true story. Sue and John gave birth to their first child, a son, Robert, on July 13, 2002.

Before his birth, a friend of theirs (ok, this friend is me, Karen) who had used cloth diapers introduced them to the idea of cloth. They decided to give it a try, but were not convinced of cloth over disposables. (Perhaps they were trying cloth just to humor me.) They started with a sampling of products. They also had disposable diapers and wipes on hand, which they had received as gifts.

Robert is born! 8 pounds 7 ounces, 19 inches long. The hospital uses cloth prefold diapers and covers with hook and loop closures. (What is hook and loop? Click here).

Four days old: John says, "Once I didn't put the closure tight enough and it scratched his tummy. I like the snaps better right now. I'm doing nearly all of the diaper changing. When I run out of Re-Uz'm aios, I alternate between Infant Fitted Diapers and disposables. I haven't tried the prefolds yet." (they have both newborn size and infant size DSQ Prefold Diapers on hand, along with 6 Infant Fitted Snap and 6 Infant Fitted and 7 Re-Uz'm aios, and many different kinds of covers.)

Sue says, "I prefer the cloth to the disposables, believe it or not! The disposables leave red marks on his legs. The red marks go away after a short time, but still, I really don't like that. Plus, once I felt a warm, wet feeling all of a sudden on my tummy while he was nursing. Yikes! He had peed right out of the disposable! I was soaked. I had to change all my clothes. The Re-Uz'm All-in-Ones have never leaked yet. We need another dozen of those!"

I love my Re-Uz'm Elite aios (all-in-ones)!  Here I am in an Infant Fitted Diaper.

They got 11 more Re-Uz'm Elite All-in-Ones and 1 Bumkins aio size small. To be continued... So far, I'd say they have found that that convenience and fit of the newborn size aios to be the best for them. I'm very curious to see what will happen as little Robert grows big.

Note from Karen: Most new parents are logically very, very gentle with their newborn. This is why the hook and loop closure scratched Robert, it was way too loose. It really is ok to put the diaper on snug enough so that the hook and loop doesn't scratch, but new parents are sometimes a bit timid about it. After a few days you will get used to each other and realize that your baby won't break when you touch him, and both hook and loop closures and snaps work fine. Hook and loop is faster, but sometimes snaps are preferred.

Update July 20, 2002. 1 week old:

Now on July 20, just 1 week old, Mom and Dad are pros! Here I am in a Bummis Super Print size newborn. Mom and Dad are using everything from aios to fitteds to prefolds and all kinds of covers, no problem!

Update July 24, 1.5 weeks old. Mom and Dad still love the Elite aios as fastest and easiest, but also now like the Bummi Cotton size small with infant prefolds because the prints are so cute. The Bumkins aio size small is still too big. Robert is just about back to his birthweight now of 8 pounds 7 ounces.
