A note about choosing covers Ok, this is the hard part. The diaper choice is easier, because that is often a budget (price-driven) decision. But the covers are closer in price to each other, so personal preference comes into play more here. We've tried to summarize each cover the end of each description by saying "This cover is terrific because.." so you can more easily spot the differences in the covers. Sometimes you just have to try a few before finding your personal favorite. Pay attention to the links to "See this on baby". But don't worry, these are all excellent covers. If you get overwhelmed with the choices, just pick the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap or Bummi Super Brite. Nearly everyone loves those!
Definition: A diaper cover is anything to put over a diaper keep moisture in. A diaper wrap is a wrap-style diaper cover, which "wraps" around from the back to the front, for example, Bummis Super Whisper Wrap. Thus, all diaper wraps are diaper covers. We use the broader term diaper cover because there are so many styles of diaper covers. All diapers need a cover of some kind to be waterproof, except all-in-one styles that have the cover built into the diaper.
Bummis Super Whisper Wraps
Bummis is pronounced "Bum Ease", as in easy on the baby's bum (bottom). Formerly called Bummis Industrial, back when diaper services were popular, because this cover is a workhorse. It's a durable wrap style cover that can be washed with the diapers (although the manufacturer does not recommend this, lots of people do it anyhow). Generously cut to fit over nearly any kind of diaper (pinned, unpinned, and many fitteds but not all, see fitted diaper details). It has a very versatile fit which is great on just about any shape of baby; thin, average or chubby. Runs true to size, except wide babies will outgrow the medium before 30 pounds, narrow babies might fit medium all the way to 30 pounds, so consider that in your size choice if baby is over about 22 pounds. It's three layers- a waterproof laminate between two layers of polyester knit. That means no laminate touches baby on the inside because it's hidden between the two layers of knit. This polyester knit inside get a bit damp inside when the diaper is saturated, so you need a fresh cover a bit more often than when using a cover that has an exposed laminate on the inside a when using this cover to avoid odors. Bummis Supers are our most popular cover! A true workhorse and a great price. The backbone of many cloth diaper wardrobes when used over prefolds. It is perhaps the most popular cover in the US for homewashers. Super Prints and Super Whisper have Aplix brand hook and loop closures, Super Snap has snap closures. All Bummis covers are latex-free. Made in Canada. This cover is terrific because it fits nearly every baby very well and is very durable.

Hidden or exposed PUL? (the laminate, which is most commonly polyurethane laminate, called "PUL", it's the layer that makes the cover waterproof)
A choice. Both kinds are great. Most people own some of each style. Bummis Supers, Imse Vimse, and Mommys Touch covers are examples of hidden laminate. Bummis Super Brite, Thirsties and Litewrap are examples of exposed laminate. Exposed laminate covers don't have a layer inside that can absorb moisture so they can be reused through quite a few changes. Hidden laminate covers can be used through a few changes, but you might need a fresh cover a bit sooner than with exposed laminate because the soft inside will pick up odors sooner on the inside. Some moms prefer hidden laminate because they don't want the laminate touching baby at all on the inside, or they feel that the knit polyester inner layer is more comfy or cooler next to baby's skin, or they like that the diaper stays put better in a hidden laminate cover (doesn't slide around on the slippery exposed laminate surface). But others really like the convenience of being able to re-use the cover through more changes between washings. It can be less expensive to use exposed laminate covers because you need fewer of them because you can re-use them before washing them more times. The exposed laminate is sometimes called a "wipe-clean" interior. "Wipe clean" is a misnomer, in my opinion. They will still need regular washing of course, but if you sink-wash they dry a bit faster. Which do you choose? Many don't really notice much difference between the two styles in real-life use. Most moms own some of each and enjoy them both.
Bummis Super Brite
See this on a baby
Like the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap but with gussets and no inner polyester layer. The PUL (waterproofing) is exposed on the inside for a more slick, "wipe-clean" surface. White plus 4 prints. We will have these available at soon as they hit the market. I did have the opportunity to test a sample on my daughter and I like it a lot. It runs a little bit smaller in the leg than the Super Whisper since it has gussets. In addition to the gusset difference, the other big difference between this and the ever-popular Bummis Super Whisper Wraps above is that the laminate (polyurethane waterproofing) is exposed on the inside of the cover in the Super Brite, whereas in the Super Whisper Wrap it is covered - hidden behind a light layer of soft polyester knit. Thus this is a thinner cover, since the laminate is exposed. Which do you prefer? Slick waterproof-feeling material inside or soft knit material inside? Both are fully waterproof. A great cover sure to be a favorite, with the tried and true high quality of a Bummis. All Bummis covers are latex-free. See this on a baby.

Thirsties Diaper Covers - V2
See this on a baby.
Thirsties is a simple wrap-style cover, similar to the Bummis Super Brites in that it has gussets and no inner polyester layer. The PUL (waterproofing) is exposed on the inside for a more slick, wipe-clean surface. The size is different than Bummis Supers. The size, fit and cut is different. They are lower on the leg and is a little larger at the hip. The gusset is deeper. Solid colors. Size small really is for 12 pounds or more, not for newborns. Mediums run larger than the sizes, listed, I think. Large is big and should fit most up to 40 pounds. A workhorse cover in fun colors. Thirsties covers are latex-free. Simple, effective and made in the USA.

Thirsties Duo Wrap - new
See colors and this on a baby.
A new cover from Thirsties. See more pictures here.
These are not the same fit as the Thirsties sized covers above. The fit is trimmer and the size runs differently. They are very nice, but please read comments here, because I don't want people assuming they are the same as the others but with snaps when they really do run differently - narrower and trimmer. I think the size change might come at 15 pounds not the 18 pounds recommended below (baby shapes vary of course, so weight recommendations are always a rough guess). Great over unpinned prefolds. Size one fits over orange edge or yellow edge. Size two fits over red edge or brown edge Cloth-eez prefold diapers, trifolded and just layed in the wrap. A no-pinning delight.

Bummi Original
See this on a baby.
Great for no-pinning. A fit snug enough to hold the diaper in place along with an interior mesh lining for no slipping makes this a nice daytime cover for unpinned diapers folded in thirds. This cover is lightweight and has a wonderful trim fit for less bulk under clothes. We do not suggest this one for nighttime, since the lycra bindings on this cover can wick when saturated. The lycra is nice and soft, and wicking is not typically a problem during the day when diaper changing happens more frequently. The 3 inch tummy panel for great adjustability and makes it very unlikely to scratch. Fits best on babies with wide, or broad hips. A wider fit than Bummis Super Whisper. It stretches at the sides (wings are stretchy), not just at the back. It's made of lightweight nylon, so wash it separately from the diapers. Made in Canada. This cover is terrific because it holds an unpinned prefold in place beautifully.

Litewrap ®
See this on a baby
This cover has a soft, breathable polyester outer and waterproof bonded polyurethane inside. It closes with a hook and loop closure, but also has a snap on each side to prevent the hook and loop closure from scratching baby's legs. This is a fairly roomy full-cut cover with leg gussets and soft elastic across the back waistband for a nice fit. This works best over pinned, fitted or semi-fitted diapers but can also be used over diapers folded in thirds, especially in size newborn and small. It is the best value in a wrap-style cover for newborns; they are big enough to accommodate an infant size prefold, whereas the other wrap style covers are really best with the less bulky newborn size prefolds. Litewraps run big, perhaps even very big. Very durable. Made in China. This cover is terrific because of it's breathability, low price and it's good fit in newborn and small. It's nice in size medium and up IF you prefer a full-cut cover, since it's taller at the hips and fuller through the rear than most covers.

Cot'nWrap®
See this on a baby
Soft! This feels nice. 100% cotton inside. A great choice for thin legs. Breathable polyurethane laminate is hidden between 2 cotton layers. No crinkliness at all to this wrap -you really can't feel that the waterproof layer is even there to the touch. I love the softness! Both the inside and the outside are cotton. It doesn't come up as tall in the front as Litewrap. It closes with a hook and loop closure, but also has a snap on each side to prevent the hook and loop closure from scratching baby’s legs. This is a fairly roomy full-cut cover with leg gussets and soft elastic across the back waistband for a nice fit. This works best over pinned or snappi fastened prefolds, or most fitted diapers. It does work with all fitteds that we sell but it only just makes it over Under the Nile. It is a mid-height cover. It can also be used over prefold diapers folded in thirds, especially in size newborn and small. Since it is roomy inside, fastening the prefold in the larger sizes may be preferred. This does fall into the category of a synthetic cover even though it has cotton on the inside and outside, because it does have a PUL layer in between the cotton. This is the only cover I know of with cotton on the inside. No polyester or PUL touches baby. Unlike the Imse Vimse Organic cover below, which has organic cotton on the outside and knit polyester on the inside, this has cotton inside, too. But does the cotton inside wick moisture to the outside? No, not if you change baby on a normal frequency, but I do not recommend this for night time or extended time in the same diaper because it can wick if pushed too far. You might be surprised how well it works. But, please note that chubby legs won't fit this well. It fits best on thin or maybe average legs. Wash in cold gently, but I've found it can "take it" more than what the label says. You aren't supposed to wash this delicate cover with the diapers. This is great on newborns because it has tiny leg openings the really fit a newborn's skinny legs well. Made in China. These run smaller than the sizes listed. For comparison, a baby who fits well into medium Bummis Super Whisper is usually a size Large Cot'n Wrap, except perhaps at the very beginning of the size medium Bummis SWW - that baby would fit a medium Cot'n Wrap. This cover is terrific because of it's cotton inside, it feels soft, and is roomy inside to fit over many fitted diapers.

Imse Vimse Organic Covers

See this on a baby
Soft! This feels wonderful! The Imse Vimse Organic Cotton Covers is wrap style covers with hook and loop closure. It has two layers of fabric - white is white organic cotton and striped is Fox Fibre® organic cotton velour on the outside. Both are polyester knit with a hidden waterproof layer of PUL on the inside. Use this over a prefold diaper without fastening the diaper, or you can pin or snappi a prefold under this if you choose to. It comes up tall enough on the waist to accommodate most fitted diapers, even Under the Nile. A very versatile cover. The soft leg-gussets are nice to keep moisture from wicking onto the outer cotton. The stripe version is Fox Fibre® is exclusive cotton that is naturally colored - not dyed, it grows that way. The natural colors darken when washed, and the fabric is more durable than ordinary cotton. Fox Fibre® is great because of the softness of the fibre, it is chemical free and friendly to the environment. Olive Stripe. Made in Sweden.

Mommys Touch One-Size Covers
See this on a baby
One size fits most. This is a diaper cover, not a pocket diaper or all-in-one. Two layers of very soft and non-crinkly PUL waterproofed polyester. No PUL touches baby, just soft knit polyester. Currently this cover is only available at Green Mountain Diapers. Mommy's Touch and GMD got together and came up with this modification of their pocket diaper design and made it into a really nice cover. I really wanted to offer a two-rows of snaps diaper cover. I'm a snap-lover, but the typical limitation of snap covers is that the snaps are where the snaps are so it either fits or it doesn't. With hook and loop you can fasten it anywhere along the loop, thus they are generally more adjustable. But this snap design is highly adjustable in all directions: waist, leg and rise! I love it! No hook-and-loop skin rubs with snaps. Snaps also don't wear out over time or get lint stuck in it like hook and loop can, so snaps do make sense on a one-size because the closure must last for a very long time, as snaps do. Of course, take care of your snaps and unsnap nicely. Never yank hard or rip open any snaps on any snap product. Great adjustability for a great fit throughout the many shapes and ages of baby. Latex-free. Made in USA! See this on a baby.

Bummis Whisper Pant nylon pull-on
See this on a baby.
It's white, not blue-ish as the picture shows. It's so thin that the blue background is showing through the material in the picture. Bummis Whisper Pant is not made of the same material as the Bummis Super Whisper Wraps. It's made of a very lightweight nylon, just like the old, no-longer-made Cloth-eez Covers and Alexis Featherlites were. Simple, effective, inexpensive. Easy and very comfortable for baby. Nothing binding or tight on baby anywhere. Fits over everything, prefolds or fitted diapers, but note that prefold diapers must be fastened under pull-on style covers. They look a bit balloon-ish, but they are so thin and lightweight they "smash down" nicely under clothing, thus are even thinner than many other options. Back when everyone used cloth diapers, this is the kind of thing everyone used. It's easier than you might think to use a pull-on. In some ways it's easier than fastening a cover, because you can't do it wrong. There is the drawback of pulling it down if there is a poop in there, but if the diaper underneath is doing it's job well, it's not bad. So like every diapering choice, there are tradeoffs. I think pull-on style covers allow maximum comfort and freedom of movement for baby. Sometimes people who are reluctant to try wool for nighttime (in spite of my, umm, strong encouragement to try wool for night) find this a great answer for night. Or you can use this for double-covering by putting it over your non-wool nighttime system for an extra layer of protection. They are also great over training pants at potty learning time, and the largest size will fit many 4 or 5 year olds. A very low price so it can be nice to have one on hand as a spare cover just in case, or to keep in the car or diaper bag as a back-up cover. Yet it's durable enough to be a workhorse. Machine wash, hang to dry. Wipe-clean interior doesn't retain odors. They run big. Do not size up. PUL nylon with lycra bindings. No polyester. No vinyl. Made in Canada.

Wool in a warm climate? YES! It's cool and it breathes. Wool is cooler than synthetics and definitely cooler than disposables.
Theresa says, "My daughter wears wool all summer, and we live in Texas. When I take her diaper off her skin is cool." I know that is hard to believe, but it's true. Wool is the most breathable of all coverings, so it is the coolest!
Jamie in Florida says, "I use wool all year on my son. He's comfortable in it and it doesn't get sweaty inside. Our house is air conditioned, but we go out a lot also and wool is definitely cool even in our humid weather. I wish I'd known about wool when my first baby was little. I really thought it would be hot but it is not. I'm a wool convert now."
Happy Heinys Wool Snap Diaper Cover - SALE
sage or melon. See this on a baby
Soft, stretchy and colorful 100% wool. It snaps to the back which makes a very nice, comfy and adjustable fit. Great for day or night. As with any wool, you need enough cotton underneath to do the job of absorbency. Nothing breathes like wool. This has all the great fit and coverage of a wool pull-on, plus the "emergency exit" of being able to undo the snaps when needed. Unlike some others, this has enough rise to actual cover the diaper so it's very unlikely to leak or get the top of the pants damp. A nice style! Lanolize before using, and relanolize as needed. Handwash as you would other wool covers. Formerly called Stacinator. You won't find anything this nice in a stretchy wool in this price range. This is a workhorse wool, yet really cute. 100% wool made by Happy Heinys in the USA. This cover is terrific because it's made in the USA, is soft, breathable, soft merino, very adjustable and colorful.

"...but I'm allergic to wool." Chances are, you are NOT allergic to wool! You are probably allergic to the chemicals that commercial wools, such as sweaters, hats, skirts and scarves are processed in. It is quite rare for anyone to be allergic to diaper wool such as Disana or Lana wools. They are pure. Really! I, too, thought I was allergic to wool for years. I couldn't stand a wool skirt or sweater. I still can't stand them! But I could sleep with Disana or Lana wool as a pillowcase if there were such a thing made. Oh, if I had a dollar for every time I heard someone tell me they are allergic to wool. Betch'ya, you are not allergic to diaper wool. I can't promise it, because there are rare people who are truly allergic, but most, I bet, are like me - not allergic to pure, natural, untreated diaper wools. A polyester fleece or suedecloth allergy appears to be far more common than a wool allergy. "...but isn't it itchy?" No! It's not. It's soft, breathable and comfortable. I have a file full of love letter emails from wool-converts, from those brave enough to try it. Are you brave enough?
Disana Organic Merino Wool Pull-On

The chocolate is dark brown and not nearly as black it looks.
Why wool? Wool is breathable. This cover is a favorite at nighttime because it virtually never leaks. The wool is totally untreated and is naturally antibacterial thus doesn't retain odors. Is wool itchy? Commercial wool can be, but this wool is untreated and wonderfully soft. Don't be afraid to try wool! This style has been loved for generations because it is so effective. The knit stretches for a gentle and comfortable fit over a very wide size range. A must for the family bed! Nighttime heavy wetter? This is the answer. It's cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Yes, really! That's because it's so breathable. Wool does need to be hand washed, and occasional lanolization is helpful. But washing is needed only very infrequently, sometimes only once a month. Wool airs out to fresh easily. View our video of how to wash wool here. Don't forget your wool care products. This wool is produced according to the organic standards. Lovely Merino wool. It was called Demeter Certified Organic, which is the highest of pure standards. Those standards are still maintained for beautiful Disana wools. Disana is a wonderful family business located in Germany, dedicated for 2 generations to organic wools and cottons, long before "organic" became a "thing". These are positively beautiful covers. It is knitted wool similar to the Aristocrat above, but has a different shape to it. We like the snugger waist that this style has (although is is still soft and comfortable) and the nice long legs this has. No leg gaps with this one! Once fully broken in, the performance is great. Once prepared, I have never, ever had a leak from one! I think this is the only cover I can can say that about, under even my kiddo's hard and deliberate testing - pushing diapers and covers to their limits. It might be too small in the legs on extremely chubby legs. It is designed to shrink some, and should be prepared by lanolizing twice and felting somewhat (shrunk a bit) before first use. Be sure to check the box in the checkout to receive the How-To Booklet which has instructions on how to prepare them for use. It's ok to size up if you are in the upper end of the weight ranges, they do shrink. Made in Germany.
Sizing note - We don't agree with the labeled tag suggested ages, so wrote out below our own suggested pound ranges which we feel is more accurate in our experience, because of the normal and expected shrinkage of the wool. Notice the overlap of weights.

Formerly called LANA, now called LANAcare. Merino wool is perhaps the softest, most luxurious wool in the world. This is the trimmest fitting and least bulky of the wool pull-ons, thus is the best choice in this style for daytime use. It is also excellent for nighttime. This wool is so soft I could use it to cover my pillow next to my face (and I used say I am "I allergic to wool", since I am very uncomfortable and itchy in wool sweaters. Diaper wool is not like commercial wool!) The size medium and large have an adjustable elasticized waist. You have to feel this cover to believe it. The picture does not do justice to this cover. These are so awesome they make me want to have another baby just so I can dress baby in these. Simple, soft, lovely. Use them day after day. A diaper cover/pants combo. Forget struggling to get pants cut for disposable diapers over your baby's cute cloth diapered bottom. Forget regular pants at all! These are the pants and they are the diaper cover. Use these pants as cover over a pinned prefold or a fitted diaper. No regular cover is needed, but if I haven't yet convinced you of how wonderful wool is, you could put a regular cover on first if you'd like to and use these as regular pants for day or night. Betcha zero leaks with that setup. Wool pants make sense for cloth diapered babies. Inside this knit wool jersey is a little pair of wool "underwear" for maximum coverage in the diaper area. Brilliant design for the job intended. The wool is soft and stretchy knit Merino wool and is certified under NOP/USDA. The waistband is hidden and is very soft and stretchy. A comfortable waistband with enough to stay up well but it's still soft can gentle. Every detail is just great on these wonderful pants made in the USA. This pant is terrific because it's adorable and effective.

"Little to Big" one-size wool cover from Little Beetles, choose snap or velcro closure. One-size fits most, about 8-30+ pounds. Adjustable snap down height, made of the same soft and stretchy organic merino wool that their covers and pants are well-loved and well-known for. By now you have already read about how wonderful wool is, and I hope you are believing it because it's true. No other diaper cover fabric breathes and feels as comfy as wool. Wool was used for many generations prior to the advent of synthetics. I love wool. Separate sizes (item above) or one-size adjustable covers? It depends. Overall, I'd have to say I like separate sizes, because there are no snaps on the outside and no extra snapped-down fabric up front at the small settings, but everyone has different preferences and needs. Yet, the adjustability of the one-size has it's advantages. This would have been wonderful for my fast-growing son who was huge. He grew very quickly through his first 6 months. Yet my third baby was petite and grew much more slowly. Every baby is unique. Growth rates vary. So having a cover that grows with baby because of the adjustable height, can be quite nice. Adjustable is especially handy when you have 2 babies of different ages or sizes to diaper. The adjustable cover can fit either child. It might be more economical to have the adjustable cover. Quite likely it is more economical to choose the adjustable cover, but don't forget that no cover, neither wool nor synthetic, will last forever. Sometimes it's nice to have a new cover after a lot of use. You might like using a different rise setting depending on which diaper you are using underneath it. Set it higher to fit a bigger nighttime diaper with additional doublers under it. This cover is terrific because it's made in the USA, is soft, breathable, organic and is very adjustable.

Disana Merino Wool Leggings (or pajama bottoms)
See Disana Leggings on a baby.
Beautiful Disana wool in a leggings style. Great pajama bottoms, or pants, or under a dress. Suitable for a boy or a girl. Not really enough wool to be a diaper cover unless you change very frequently. It is single layer. Good over your other covers as pants, for assurance of a dry bed. Soft, stretchy and comfy. Hidden elastic in the waistband. Lovely knit wool of the highest pure standards. Very soft and not at all itchy. It's a great pair of pants! And unlike the overly tight cotton pajamas, this fits and works great with cloth diapers! Use it over and over again without washing, so you probably only need to buy one. Excellent pants for an easy fit over a cloth diapered bottom and no wicking. If you've ever experienced damp cotton pajama bottoms, use these instead for a dry morning bed. I love natural fibers and I don't use polyester clothing on my baby or myself at night. I know I sleep better in natural fibers and I think baby does too. I love these even better than cotton pj's because they are wool and don't wick. Don't forget your wool care products. Once you experience natural wool on your baby, you'll just love it, and wish they made them in your size.
These run big! You can roll up the legs easily, but really, they run big.

Disana Organic Merino Wool Sleep Sack
See Disana Sleep Sack on a baby.

Lovely knit wool of the highest pure standards. Like the Disana Organic Wool Double Knit Pull-On Wool Pant, but in a sleep sack style, and one layer (single knit, not double knit). The double layer cover offers more wet zone protection, but this single layer sleep sack does offer wetness protection also. Some people will like this coverless - using the wool sleep sack as the cover, but most often people will will use this over their regular diaper plus cover system. If you felt it a little (that is, carefully shrink it a little) it will perform well without a separate cover. Wool is wonderful at night! Use instead of pajama bottoms. Excellent for the family bed. With wool as pajamas, your bed is sure to stay dry. Why wool in a sleep sack style? Because babies kick off their covers. Sleep sack style allows baby's legs to touch each other skin to skin, which is not possible in pants. It's easy to dress baby, too, since you don't have to bother with getting baby's legs into pant legs. No fussing with a million snaps, either. Quick and easy on and off. Or you can use this as a blanket over baby's clothing. The sleep sack stays on baby, yet stays off baby's face, where regular blankets sometimes wander. So cozy. Old fashioned perhaps, but versatile and it does make good sense. So much nicer than the synthetic stuff you find everywhere. No comparison, really. Wool is naturally flame retardant and meets the standards for sleepwear naturally. No chemicals, no synthetics. And unlike the overly tight cotton pajamas, this fits and works great with cloth diapers! Finally! Pajamas that fit right, plus keep the bed dry. Use it over and over again without washing, so you probably only need to buy one. Don't forget your wool care products. Once you experience natural wool on your baby, you will just love it!

LANAcare Softsleeper
See Softsleeper on a baby.
The beautiful soft and lovely LANAcare merino wool we know and love in a sleep sack style. Some people will like this coverless - using the wool sleep sack as the cover, but most often people will will use this over their regular diaper plus cover system. Wool is wonderful at night, and all day long, too. Excellent for the family bed. Why wool in a sleep sack style? Because babies kick off their covers. The sleep sack style allows baby's legs to touch each other skin to skin, which is not possible in pants. Perhaps ask your grandmother about this. Compared to the Disana Sleepsack above this is narrower, easier to care for since you don't have to bother with felting it and lanolizing it first and the wool is thicker. Also the design is different. Instead of taking the whole thing down by unbuttoning at the shoulder, you open this from the bottom. This doesn't have any fasteners, but the bottom just folds over itself and stays closed because of the way it is made. Which opening and dressing style to you prefer in a sleep sack? Use it over and over again without washing, so you only need to buy one. Also, you really won't need much for newborn baby clothes because for the most part you will only want to use this all the time. Don't forget your woolcare products. Once you experience natural wool on your baby, you will just love it! Made in Lithuania. Choose natural or soft sand brown. New lower prices for 2009 due to stronger US dollar.
